“It was clear to me after spending a short time with Scott Swanson that he is a man worthy of my trust. My initial perception of him continues to be proven true to this day. What strikes me foremost is his ability to really listen to what it is I’m saying. One of his gifts is to be able to hear what another is saying, then with due consideration offer a measured and thoughtful response. With graceful encouragement I’ve been encouraged to view issues through a different lens. I have experienced this on both a one on one basis and in a group setting.”
Kim brandt, business owner
If you’re going to have a story, have a big story, or none at all.
“Scott is very insightful. He can see things clearly and provide an objective point of view. He is good at staying on task and drawing conversations to practical conclusions. Each conversation is ended with having achieved greater clarity and a definitive plan of action.”
Kim Mullin, Senior Manager
If you’re going to have a story, have a big story, or none at all.
“Scott’s guidance and experience were evident throughout this time of transformation. Moreover, Scott consistently asked the often-challenging questions and inspired thought; that have helped manage the changes which confront us. Scott is an articulate teacher. I am deeply thankful for his willingness to give of himself, and for the time he shared with us.”
brian zwick, account executive

After almost two decades into my career as a congregational minister, I was discouraged. Something had
been missing in my work for at least a decade. I was good at my job, and had tried everything I could
think of to make it fulfilling. Yet none of it really gave me the joy or energy I believed was possible.
My dreams seemed unattainable.
I had no options.
It was as though I was in a room with a bunch of doors — all of them locked. I had to just
stay in the room, make the best of it, and hope that something would change. I was losing my grasp on
life. I just kept plodding along. The things that were life-giving did not feel realistic or viable,
and what felt viable was not particularly life-giving.
When my mom was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, I couldn’t even fake it anymore.
I had done my best to keep going in spite of myself for years. I was good enough at my job and had been
doing it long enough that I could still be effective, but I was barely functioning.
I sat at the old wooden desk in my office, staring at the screen of my MacBook with a pile of paper in
front of me. I knew there was a connection between the computer and the paper, but I couldn’t make out
what it was. It was like someone had poured sand into the gears in my head.
I was done.
I can’t say exactly when it happened, just that I know it did and at the time, I felt powerless to stop it.
The storytelling mind is allergic to uncertainty, randomness, and coincidence.
It is addicted to
meaning
If the storytelling mind cannot find meaningful patterns in the world, it will try to impose them.
In short, the storytelling mind is a factory that churns out true stories when it can,
but will
manufacture lies
when it can’t.
Through the next number of months, I had several realizations that changed everything for me:
Stories are everywhere. In fact, stories are a primary human technology for interpreting experience …
We can influence our emotional and mental state simply by telling ourselves a different story …
We have a great deal of control and agency in our lives — when we tell better stories …
Now I am living my dream of helping men examine the stories they tell about themselves and others; create new and better stories about their experiences that align with their deepest values; and lean
into their new stories in ways that make their lives better.
Which means I never have to worry about
burning out or struggling to find my purpose again.
That’s why I’m so passionate about helping YOU think about your life in fresh ways…
so that you can
transform your feeling of being stuck and instead release freedom, creativity, and renewed purpose for
the second half of your life.
Join me inside Personal Story Coach so we can create better stories together.

will never experience that sense of fulfillment until they stop recycling the same old stories and interpreting the world through the same old lens that doesn’t serve them. In order to have the life they desire, they must do two things: Reimagine their life story and create a new ecosystem to live in.

INTRO
There may be aspects of our life we cannot change, but we can always change our thinking. Sometimes the greatest barriers we face are the stories we tell ourselves. They inform the way we act, the choices we make, and they powerfully shape our reality. There are the facts – and there is what we tell ourselves about the facts. Changing our stories changes our thinking, our life, and the world around us.
Over and over, professionally and personally, I have witnessed the transforming power of looking at and changing the stories we tell ourselves. I know that some stories are more life-giving, more creative, more hope-filled than others.
With me as your coach, we will look at how the stories you are telling get in your way. I will help you create stories that strengthen and improve your life and work.
