The Jesuit priest Anthony de Mello wrote that waking up is unpleasant. “You are nice and comfortable in bed. It is irritating to be woken up. That’s the reason the wise guru will not attempt to wake people up.”
Most people are not interested in transformation or personal growth or a cure. A cure is painful. What most people want is relief.
Relief is a fine place to start. And there is no law requiring us to limit ourselves to what “most people” want.
Just because it’s not what a lot of people are seeking, doesn’t mean that we can’t. Not everyone needs to want to wake up for those who do want it to do the work.
For those who are lured toward waking up, only a few companions are necessary. If others want to keep sleeping, that’s no one’s business but theirs.
