Impermanence, part 3

There is nothing inherently wrong with creating a story about a thought, feeling, or experience. It can be useful to have access to these memories – up to a point. The problem comes when we forget that what we have is an interpretation and not the actual memory, thought, or experience itself.

Picture a dragonfly or butterfly collection: a box of specimens pinned to a backboard with the name of each underneath. These are not actual dragonflies or butterflies. They are collections of dead insects that once upon a time were real, live creatures.

Treating an interpretation of something long gone like it’s a real thing is like pretending that butterfly with a pin through its thorax could fly away at any second.
