One of the places our stories converge is around loss and grief. When a loved one dies, we are presented with a flood of memories. Each of them is its own narrative – a little stream or rivulet with its own independent existence.
Flowing together to form larger collections of memories, these narratives may arrange themselves along themes of time or geography, or they may stand out as salient moments against an indistinct background.
As memories and narratives continue to merge into the river that is the life of a person, the stories that float to the surface are what we see. Underneath, sometimes forgotten, sometimes unknown to all but one or a few, or even only to the person themselves: the entirety of a life.
