This week marks an important time for two thirds of the great spiritual traditions from the “west.” In Judaism, Pesach is the week-long festival commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from 430 years of slavery in Egypt.
According to the tradition, the tenth and final of the plagues visited by God on Egypt, and the one that finally persuaded the Egyptian Pharaoh to let the Hebrews leave under the leadership of Moshe, was the killing of the first-born son in every Egyptian household (even the cattle!) by the Angel of Death.
When each Israelite family slaughtered a lamb and sprinkled the blood on their doorpost, it was a sign to the Angel of Death to pass over that house and spare that family.
If there was to be any doubt, just ask the Egyptians and the lambs.
Freedom is not free.
