Learning can be very upsetting and can set off a lot of negative emotions.
Having to learn quickly, or having to learn difficult lessons, is not always an enjoyable experience. It’s fair to expect that, in the midst of a difficult conversation, there may be anger, bitterness, resentment, and defensiveness.
Just because someone exhibits these behaviours doesn’t mean they are learning. But if they are, no one is served when the reaction to the behaviour matches the content or emotional wavelength of the negative response.
If the container of learning cannot hold anger and process it, our collective growth is stunted.
