Before we create and inhabit the stories of our own choosing, we inhabit the story we are raised in. For a while, that story is all-encompassing. The process of maturing, and what psychologists call individuation is, in part, sorting out what parts of the story we are raised in will be kept, rejected, or adapted.

We all do better or poorer in how we navigate the process of individuation. In a sense, what we’re doing is decolonizing ourselves from the stories that shaped us. Anyone who is making some effort at decolonizing themselves in the cultural sense, knows how difficult this work is – how much we assume about what constitutes reality and truth, and how much is involved in unlearning what we think we know.

Sometimes the best we can do is increase our awareness. In the process we make space for new things to emerge.
