Summer is traditionally, for many, a time for slowing down. Summer vacations. Summer days. Summer speaks of spaciousness and expansiveness and possibility and freedom.
But when the heat comes, the spaciousness and expansiveness are replaced by a closeness. Slowness becomes less a matter of choice and more one of necessity. We are as immobilized in our shelters as we are by deep cold – more so when we take into account the fact that at least one can dress for the cold.
While we define it differently, all of us desire some version of spaciousness, of freedom. When summer’s promise of freedom is replaced with constraints, we feel the loss.
