When we think about how to travel from where we are to where we want to go, choices matter. When I travelled in Europe, I decided to (mostly) hitchhike. It was slower and less predictable than other options, but it was a good way to meet locals and more within my budget. When it was time to leave Europe, I decided to fly. I thought about taking a freighter for the experience, but I wanted to make it to Montreal in time for the Jazz festival.
Back to the metaphor: any time we decide to move from where we are to where we want to go, we have choices about how to do that. It may not feel like choice (how many people seriously consider a freighter?), but it is. When we are travelling in the territory of the soul or psyche, there is rarely a direct, non-stop flight. The cultural emphasis on scale and speed actually decreases efficiency. How we get to wherever “there” is not incidental. The journey becomes the destination.
