If we are going to save ourselves, the time is near where a reckoning must happen. One rooted in a moral awareness – a moral awakening, where the language and concepts of Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday mornings are embraced and employed in our common life.
We need a collective wrestling with concepts like mercy, redemption, love, justice, responsibility, grace – not merely as concepts, but as qualities of our collective experience.
We’re at a stage in the game where we cannot afford the illusion of independence anymore. We are not defined by the worst things we have done, but until we can acknowledge those things and seek out the corrective, the redemptive, the restorative together – we will not arrive at a point where we can rise to the challenges that confront us.
