Humanity has mastered more of the mysteries of nature than people as recently as a century or two ago might have thought possible. And yet, mastery of the mystery within ourselves eludes us still. It is like the opposite to the ancient maps of the world that, at their edges, warned potential travellers that “Beyond here be dragons.” For us, on the map of humanity, the unknown mysteries lie more at the centre than the edges.
We live so close to difference, with such powers of destruction, that Auden’s line has never been more true: “We must love one another or die.”
