This week also sees the Christian observance of Holy Week that leads up to Good Friday/Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday. The holiest time in the Christian calendar commemorates events that took place one year in Jerusalem during Pesach, just over 2000 years ago.

In the context of a celebration and commemoration of freedom, the arrest, trial, and execution of someone who doesn’t appear to have committed any crimes by the religious establishment and an occupying Imperial army is more than a little ironic.

As with anything in life, freedom is not guaranteed or absolute. Even when we do what we can to work for freedom, forces beyond our control can circumscribe, punish, and even undo our efforts.

When what we value is also fragile, it becomes even more precious.
