As long as we try to hang on to what is or what has been (as though we actually could grasp the present, even if we wanted to) we will not be open to receiving the new thing which is already coming to be.
It can feel hard to let go of what we have invested so much in. We become attached to and identify ourselves with letters in front of or behind our names, possessions, accolades, successful careers, even family and friends. The wisdom path reminds us that, sooner or later, it will all disappear. How much better, then, to learn to hold all of it lightly now – so that we will be less inclined to miss it when it’s gone, and be open to what newness might present itself.
