Everywhere you go – inside yourself or in the world – there is a conversation going on. Whether you are a participant or a bystander, there is a lot to be learned by paying attention to who is carrying the conversation … and who is listening.

In her book, Kitchen Table Wisdom, Rachel Remen writes about the power of listening:

“When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it. Most of us don’t value ourselves or our love enough to know this. … A loving silence often has more power to heal and to connect than most well-intentioned words.”

Perhaps the most important gift we offer another is our attention. Listening from the heart – deeply, carefully, contemplatively – is a creative act, for us and the other person.
