Informed by his own disabilities (from birth and mid-life), Kevin Kling breaks down the word disability in a fascinating way. Dis is the name of the capital city in Dante’s underworld. Dis is the underworld, “the place of shadow and reflection, where you round off the rough edges of torment and desire.”
As the prefix for disability, it doesn’t mean “inability,” it means “able through the world of shadow and reflection.” It’s just another way of doing things – having a foot in two worlds.
