John Paul Lederach has devoted his life to building peace in places like Columbia and Northern Ireland. He talks about the challenge of moving through this time and into whatever comes next and the importance of keeping our fragility resilient.
The natural response to pain is to protect ourselves. The great teachers and traditions tell us that the way through, the way to transform suffering – ours and others’ – is to keep a soft heart. As tempting as it is to become calloused, hard, invulnerable, it doesn’t get us where we need to go, or give our hearts what they really desire.
The middle way is a resilient fragility.
