The Buddhists tell this story:
Once there was a novice monk who went to his master and asked whether by committing faithfully to all the spiritual practices and disciplines he might one day attain enlightenment.
The master replied that all the spiritual practice in the world can no more guarantee that one will attain enlightenment than they can make the sun rise.
The novice thought for a moment and replied, “Well then why bother with them?”
“Because,” the master replied, “the practices will help you be awake – just in case the sun rises.”
