The Volume Paradox

One of the results of media is amplification.

Amplifiers are neutral; they don’t make decisions about the quality or content of the sound it is increasing, or the motivation behind making something louder. Intention is important but insufficient.

Making something louder adds the feeling of urgency whether it’s helpful or not, and without necessarily making something better. Sometimes the best thing we can do when we receive a loud signal (from the world or from inside ourselves) is turn the volume down first.

Sometimes softer is easier to hear.
